Former Rye House promoter Eddie Lesley issues a rallying call for the industry to get behind the Kama’s Rescue campaign.
I refer to the letter from Ann Brandon which featured in your column on Wednesday 24th July. I have spoken to Mrs Brandon and I know
that this is an opportunity for the industry to demonstrate its concern for the welfare of retired greyhounds.
Mrs Brandon currently has kennels in Essex housing greyhounds from The Retired Greyhound Trust and the numbers are increasing.
Accordingly I am writing to The Post to ascertain whether its readers, greyhound owners, promoters and the off-course betting industry would support a fundraising idea.
The proposal is that each owner would give £1 of their prize money from each race that they competed in for the month of August. Each track
would at the end of the month have collected from the owners an amount which could then be donated to Kama’s Rescue.
On my calculations £30,000 or thereabouts could be achieved by the end of the month. This would enable Mrs Brandon to enlarge her rescue
facility.
Furthermore, the off course betting industry could offer to match the donation pound for pound, which would demonstrate to the government their support to the welfare of this breed.
